Hot August Nights 2018

Hot August Nights 2018, Reno NV

Tuesday Aug 7 – Sun Aug 12

HOT AUGUST NIGHTS 2018 – MY PLAN:
I’ve been coming to Hot August Nights every year since 2014, covering it for this website. Last year I got the brilliant idea of inviting all my old high school buddies to this year’s event to meet up at sort of a ‘reunion’. What makes this the perfect venue for us? We’re all car guys, or at least we were in high school. Most of us hadn’t seen each other in many years, and it was time, past time. Everyone arrived on Tuesday, some later than others, but we started meeting up on Tuesday evening. We came from Idaho and Arizona, all over California, and one of us lives in Reno. Talk about convenient.

DAY ONE: TUESDAY, AUGUST 7

I like to call Hot August Nights 2018 “a week-long, city-wide celebration of American Car Culture”, and I can’t think of a better way of describing it. 2018 was the 31st anniversary of this iconic event. My wife and I left Sonora CA on Tuesday morning around 10:30am traveling north along historic Highway 49 all the way to Auburn on Highway 80. The skies were hazy from a record number of forest fires. We arrived at the Peppermill in Reno around 5pm, checked in, and I hit the car show out in the north parking lot. It was still hotter than blazes out and the number of cars in the show seemed light. Was it the heat or that it was just Day-One? Everyone else was traveling today too, right? Never fear, by Wednesday, things were jumping.

Hot August Nights 2018 – Peppermill Show & Cruise

ABOVE: The ‘Beverly Belles’ performed at Peppermill’s outdoor stage all week long, harmonizing to 40s and 50s oldies, amid all the cars.

BELOW: They call it the “Mill Mile” although I doubt that it’s a mile long. But over the course of the week, hundreds of classic and custom cars slowly cruised the car show at the Peppermill.

ABOVE: Check out this totally custom 4-door Chevy Nova wagon with the “Woody” treatment.

BELOW: Every car show has to have a Gasser. This one’s a ’66 Plymouth GTX.

Hot August Nights 2018 – Atlantis Show & Cruise

DAY TWO: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8

We gathered together, my friends and I, and our wives, for a day of looking at cars and spending some time together. We talked, we reminisced, we laugh, we ate, we drank…and we looked at a whole lot of cars. And Reno was full of them at Hot August Nights 2018. Every year, there are car shows (called Show & Shines) at nearly every major hotel or casino. The big ones are at the Peppermill, the Atlantis, and the Grand Sierra Resort (GSR), and all of them have cruises as well. We hit all three shows on Wednesday, and man was it hot! Temperatures hovered in the triple-digits all week. But it was worth it.

ABOVE & BELOW: The Atlantis Hotel & Casino hosts an enormous car show & cruise in the parking lot across the street from the hotel. Hundreds of cars & trucks of every type beckoned.

ABOVE: Several of these cars were seen elsewhere during the week. Owners move their cars around from show-to-show, and drive them in Cruise Night.

BELOW: Check out this wild 1957 Eldorado Brougham. Truly a post-less wonder!

Hot August Nights 2018 – Grand Sierra Show & Cruise

GRAND SIERRA SHOW & CRUISE
This is the biggest of the 3 main casino car shows. It’s enormous! There are hundreds, maybe thousands of cars on display, along with countless vendors, food drink, music (sometimes live), and cruising all day and well into the night. Eddie Money played on their big outdoor stage on Thursday night.

ABOVE: Believe it or not, this is a real ’66 Ford GT40, not a replica or a kit car. It was discovered in South Africa sans drivetrain. He had it restored there by Superformance, the same folks to who build GT40 replicas out of aluminum. After they got the car right, he shipped it here then dropped in a Roush engine.

BELOW: Cruising went all day long and into the night.

DAY THREE: THURSDAY, AUGUST 9

Our plan was to go to the first day of the 3-day MAG Auction, but we got waylaid at lunch and the bar and…well, you know the rest. But we did catch the Mopar Show at the Nugget in the neighboring town of Sparks NV. It turned out to have more than just Mopars, and we enjoyed them all, but there were plenty of Mopars just the same. We ended up Downtown for dinner, then walked right out the door and into the middle of Cruise Night. They close down a huge section of Reno’s Downtown district and allow only 1972-and-earlier vehicles in a ‘controlled cruise’, meaning no gettin’ crazy. It was great. Hot August Nights aren’t called that for nothing. On days like these with 100-degree + temperatures, it’s still 80 degrees at 9:00pm, but it feels fantastic. And there’s a lot going on.

Hot August Nights 2018 – Nugget Mopar Show

ABOVE: This gorgeous 1959 Plymouth Sports Fury was at the Mopar Show. The owner, who works for Hot August Nights, learned to drive in this very car when it was new and she was just 16.

NUGGET MOPAR SHOW
The Nugget Hotel & Casino in nearby Sparks NV advertised a Mopar Show. We went, but it proved to be an eclectic mix of American cars, not just Mopars. However, there were a helluva lot of nice Mopars there, just the same. Again, everyone with the space seems to host some sort of car show during the course of Hot August Nights. This one was worth the trip.

BELOW: The Ultimate Mopar: a 1970 Superbird.

Hot August Nights 2018 – Downtown Reno & Sparks Shows

DOWNTOWNS BRISTLE WITH CARS
Both Downtown Reno and Downtown Sparks close their streets down during the day to host great, sprawling car shows, amid the glitz and glamour of the big Casinos. Earlier I referred to Hot August Nights 2018 as a “week-long, city-wide celebration of American car culture”. But it’s really bigger than that. It takes in not just Reno, but neighboring Sparks as well, and the week before we arrived, the tiny Old West town of Virginia City was host to the kickoff of Hot August Nights 2018, and they do so every year. So, this is really a regional show.

Hot August Nights 2018 – Downtown Reno Cruise Night

CRUISE NIGHT IS A GAS
Every night starting on Wednesday, from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, the City of Reno closes its streets in the Downtown district, and hosts what they call a “controlled cruise”. Everyone else calls it Cruise Night. The ‘controlled’-part means to smoky burnouts or racing allowed. However, during the course of a good night, you’ll see plenty to provocative moves and lots of engines being revved up loudly. It’s a lot of fun watching all those old cars drive by, just like the old days. Ah, I remember them well. You have to have a pre-1972 car to participate. Did I say car? It doesn’t have to be a car-car, it can be a truck, a van, a vintage police car, a fire truck, or just about any other conveyance you can imagine, and some that you can’t, as long as it was built before 1972. On these hot weeks, like Hot August Nights 2018 was in spades, these warm evenings are what it’s all about. You do most of your partying, walking around and ogling cars once the sun has gone down. At 9:00 pm it was a balmy 85 degrees, having hit 100+ during the heat of the day. That’s why they call it Hot August Nights, right?

Hot August Nights 2018 – MAG Classic Car Auction

DAY FOUR: FRIDAY, AUGUST 10

Every year since 2015, Motorsports Auction Group, also known as MAG Auctions, puts on a stellar classic car auction during Hot August Nights. This year, as always, the 3-day auction was held at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. Again, the heat outside was oppressive this week, so we planned our tour of the cars during the heat of the day on Friday. It worked out great. With temperatures hovering over 100-degrees, we were inside in the air conditioned comfort of Car Guy Nirvana. The vehicles that crossed the block over these 3 days, Thursday through Saturday, were eye-popping and mouth-watering, and quite eclectic. The bidding on Friday, which was Day Two of the auction, was modest I thought. I saw some real deals go down, including a 1970 Camaro SS (clone) for $16,500, and a gorgeous bright red 1992 Corvette went for just $4,000. Of course, there were plenty of high-priced cars as well. More on the auction results later. They have places to eat, and full bars in several spots within the building, along with vendors selling all kinds of cool stuff. Like I said, Nirvana. The place is just jumping all day long, and the cars just call to you as you walk down long aisles of some of the prettiest cars you’ve ever seen.

DAY FIVE: SATURDAY, AUGUST 11

Our little group split up, some going to Virginia City, others to Lake Tahoe, while a few stayed in Reno, me included. We got together that evening for drinks and our last dinner together, and we got out pictures from the old days and passed them around, talked, joked, remembered. One of my buddies had my 1972 yearbook. What? I must have brought it over to his place back when I was a junior in high school to have my buddies sign it, then forgot it there. It was embossed with my name on the cover, and had not a single signature in it. So, as we enjoyed our last evening together, they passed it around and all signed it. In the end, what is the value of nostalgia? Be it old cars or old friends. I don’t know how to explain it to someone who doesn’t already get it. But it makes me feel good to relive some of the best moments of my life with my closest friends from 40 years ago. For a few glimmering seconds I was back on the streets of Hanford CA with my crazy buddies, drag racing out in the country, or doing smoky burnouts in front of the high school. There were seven of us who went through high school together, and we weren’t jocks or dopers or aggies, so we were misfits. We started out as kids on motorcycles, and evolved into young car guys. Hooligans might be a more apt description. But, we were nice hooligans. We didn’t have the money to buy fast cars like the rich kids, we traded for parts, helped each other out, and we built fast cars. Six of us made it to Hot August Nights 2018, one was down with a bad back. We all called him up on our last night, passed the phone around, and in the end we all vowed to meet up again next year. This time it will be all seven of us at Hot August Nights 2019, which will run Tuesday, August 6 through Sunday, August 11, 2019. Be there. Aloha.
