1974 CHEVY CAMARO BACKGROUND
The Muscle Car Wars had ended in 1970, and with each passing year, performance just seemed to get worse and worse. By the end of the 1974 model year, Chevy pulled the plug on the Z28, presumably because they were embarrassed about the lack of performance of the new ‘smog-dog’ engines. There would be no 1975 Z28. But never fear, it returned for the 1976 model year. But, there is no question that outright performance was being put on the back burner, replaced by boy-racer stripe kits. It didn’t fool anyone. But, such were the times they were living in. Another indication of these times was the ‘seatbelt interlock’ system federally-mandated for the 1974 Chevy Camaro. It meant that you couldn’t start the car unless your seat belt was fastened. By 1975, this law was back off the books, making the 1974 Chevy Camaro the only year to receive this wonderful safety measure.
