1969 AMC AMX CHANGES
The AMX was in its second year and was largely carried over from the 1968 model year. Small differences in trim and details were made. The 5-spoke Magnum 500-like styled steel wheels were no longer chromed, but now they carried a stainless trim ring. Racing stripes were now available in 5 colors. Inside, there was a new 8000 RPM tachometer and a 140-MHP speedometer, along with revised door panels, new carpet and the option of leather upholstery.

WILD NEW COLORS FOR 1969 AMC AMX
Following the 60s tradition of crazy names for option packages, AMC released its “Big Bad” series of special day glo paint colors, including Neon Brilliant Blue (BBB), Neon Brilliant Orange (BBO) and Neon Brilliant Green (BBG). The option package was only $34, and included color-matched front and back bumpers, special front grille trim and rubber bumperettes for the back. Great idea perhaps, but not many takers. Fewer than 800 were ordered in the wild color schemes combined.

Engine choices remained unchanged from the ’68 model year. All AMXs had floor shifters, whether standard or automatic. All 4-speed manual-equipped cars now came with Hurst shifters. Command Shift automatic-equipped cars now had clearly marked shift quadrants that helped capitalize on its manual-shift capability. Marked “1”, “2” and “D”, the first 2 allowed you to hold that gear without fear of an automatic upshift. Once in Drive or 3rd gear, it acted like a conventional auto. Scrappy, under-capitalized AMC pulled off this coup decades before the rest of the industry caught on.
