1968 Chevy Camaro

1968 Chevy Camaro

1968 CHEVY CAMARO: SUCCESS FOLLOWS SUCCESS. With the popular and sales success of the 1967 CamaroChevrolet didn’t want to tamper with it too much, so the ’68 is very similar. By 1968, you didn’t have to buy a Camaro SS to get the 350 V8. Now, however, the SS option could include a big block 396 V8.

DON’T FIX IT IF IT AIN’T BROKE. The basic body shell is the same from 1967 and 1968. Minor differences include front turn signals, grille, tail lights, and most significantly, the ’67 has side vent windows and the ’68 does not. Another tell-tale giveaway is the side marker lights, Federally-mandated from the 1968 model year on, all ’68s have them, the ’67 does not.

CHASSIS UPGRADES. To counter the wheel-hop problems encountered in the ’67 Camaro, the rear shock absorbers were staggered on the ’68, with the right shock behind, and the left shock ahead of the rear axle. Higher performance V8 versions got multiple-leaf rear springs.

INTERIOR UPGRADES. With the elimination of the ’67’s side vent windows, the 1968 needed to keep the air moving through the cabin, and so “Astro Ventiliation” was introduced, which required all cars, whether equipped with AC or not, to have round air vents in the dash.

1967 vs 1968 Chevy Camaro COMPARISON

1967 & 1968 CHEVY CAMARO COMPARO

The two photos above do a good job of illustrating one of the most prominent styling differences between the first 2 years of the First Generation of Camaros. The 1968 on top has rectangular-ish turn signals, while the 1967 above has round lights. The grilles and emblems are also different, the ’68 having a more pronounced center split.
