Hot August Nights 2016

July 29-Aug 6 in Reno NV

CAN’T WAIT FOR HOT AUGUST NIGHTS 2016
It’s that time of year again. I can feel the flutter, the restlessness, the anxiousness. Hot August Nights 2016 is almost here. I’ve got my room reserved, and I can’t wait to go! There are few classic car events that can match it. Maybe Car Week in Monterey (if you’re a rich snob), but I like this better. These are cars I can relate to, and nice friendly people who aren’t out to impress anyone. Like me, they’re here for the cars, the sunshine and the good times. If you can make it, you should go. If you’ve never been before, then you should definitely go. If you’re a car nut like me, you’ll love it.

LOTS TO DO & SEE AT HOT AUGUST NIGHTS 2016
For over a week, the entire area (not just Reno, but also Sparks and Historic Virginia City) explodes with car-related activity. Car shows, cruises, drag races, burnout contests, live bands, classic car auctions, cars, cars and more cars. There’s nothing else like it. Go to their website to get all the details at HotAugustNights.net. Hope to see you there.

HOT AUGUST NIGHTS 2016 – AT THE PEPPERMILL
We stayed at the Peppermill, which is a great place to stay, by the way. It’s right in the epicenter of the action, they have a huge cars show and cruise right there in their parking lot, and the rooms are very nice. Oh, and the food and gambling ain’t bad either. So, let’s take a quick tour of The Peppermill Hotel & Casino’s own slice of Hot August Nights 2016.

The MAG Classic Car Auction

HOT AUGUST NIGHTS 2016 WELCOMES M.A.G. AUCTIONS
Previous Hot August Nights have had classic car auctions conducted by Silver Auctions, Barrett-Jackson and others over it’s 30 year history. But this year is the first for Motorsport Auction Group, or MAG Auctions. They did a fine job, and as always had lots of killer cars. While I was there primarily to cover it for American-Muscle-Cars.net, I also registered as a bidder, and actually wanted to be ready to buy something if the right car came along at the right price. As it turns out, it didn’t happen. Oh well, maybe next time. But for now, let’s enjoy some of the cars they were selling.

ABOVE: This is the same 1939 GM Futureliner that Dave Kindig and his crew restored on his hit TV show “Bitchin’ Rides” on the Velocity Network. This is #3 of 12 the GM built to tour the country as part of GM’s Futurama displays. This one displayed an Allison J-35 jet engine in the back.
BELOW: I got to meet Dave Kindig (left) and get a few snapshots with him (that’s me on the right). He’s a really nice guy who is willing to take his time with people. He looks you in the eye when he’s talking to you and you can tell he’s really listening to you, not just waiting go get it over with, like some celebs.

ALREADY THINKING ABOUT HOT AUGUST NIGHTS 2017
So, Hot August Nights 2016 is over now, and just a memory and some great pictures and video. I had four wonderful days there and had a ball. I’m already planning next year’s trip. This time I’m going with a group of friends. That’s about the only thing that could make the experience any better. Maybe I’ll see you there next year…
