BARRETT-JACKSON AUCTION-RENO 2014
AT HOT AUGUST NIGHTS

Barrett-Jackson, America’s premium classic car auction house, blew the doors off the Reno Convention Center yet again at this year’s Hot August Nights in Reno NV (“The Biggest Little City in the World”). Hundreds of cars, all lovingly displayed in the massive showroom, would run through the auction blocks over three days. Starting on Thursday, July 31, and running through Saturday, August 2, 2014, it was a fitting finale to an awesome week for car guys.

GOOD PRICES FOR BOTH BUYERS & SELLERS

It’s not news to any of the ‘classic car faithful’ that the market is going nuts right now. Especially for high-end muscle cars, hemis, big blocks and limited-production specials. The prices of everything are up, however. If you’re thinking of selling, now seems like a good time. But with prices on the rise, maybe not. But, I still saw some good deals sneak across the stage. If you’re happy with a sweet ’70 Firebird instead of a high-dollar Trans Am, you could have stolen the black one, below for $19,800. Just try to build one this nice for that kind of money.

ABOVE: CORVETTE ROW
These were just a small sampling of the Corvettes on display, for sale to the highest bidder. Mouth-watering stuff.
BELOW: SHELBY STABLEMATES
A ’65 Shelby GT350 sits next to a ’67 GT500, both in classic blue-over-white Shelby livery. Again, just a small sampling of the Shelbys available to drool over, all under one roof.

ABOVE: ’69 YENKO CAMARO A true survivor, one of only 100 built, with 450hp 427 & 4-speed. It’s even listed in the official Yenko Registry. It sold with a reserve for $203,500.
BELOW: 1970 SHELBY MUSTANG GT350
This extremely original 2-owner car sold, without reserve, for $77,000. Original paint, one rebuild on the original 351 V8, 52,000 miles, documentation since new, and in pristine condition, I’d say someone got a real bargain here.

ABOVE: 1970 PONTIAC FIREBIRD This baby was clean inside & out. Not a show car, but a super sanitary driver, maybe even a bit too nice to drive. That’s getting to be the problem these days with classic muscle cars. Their values are getting so high that it’s unwise to drive them much, for fear of diminishing their value. But this lovely Firebird sold, with no reserve, for just $19,800. That’s less than some crappy little subcompact today.
BELOW: ’66 CHEVY EL CAMINO Very clean & well put-together. It sold for $22,000 without a reserve.

ABOVE: ’68 CAMARO SS. This has got to be one of the prettiest ’68 Camaros I have ever seen, and I’ve seen a few. And one of the few that never got the RS treatment (hideaway headlights). This beauty sold, without reserve, for $51,700.
BELOW: ’68 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA FASTBACK. This extremely clean and original Barracuda went for $25,300, selling without a reserve.

NOT JUST AN AUCTION, AN EVENT!

As always, Barrett-Jackson put on one heckuva show. Of course the auction action was red hot and immensely entertaining. But there were also vendors of every type, including both Ford and Chevy hawking their very impressive wares. Then there was the showroom, filled with literally hundreds of drop-dead gorgeous cars of every type, most classics. And more American Muscle Cars than you could shake a stick at. I was in heaven!

ABOVE: 2015 CORVETTE Z06. We got stunning pix of both the new Z06 Coupe and Convertible, months before release. How’s this for numbers: 505hp 427 small-block, the highest-rated normally-aspirated V8 in GMs history!
BELOW: VENDORS GALORE As always, there was more than just cars at Barrett-Jackson (did I just say that?!) Juke boxes, soda machines, coin op rocking horses, and the usual array of auto related products and services dotted the Reno Convention Center.

NEXT UP: VEGAS!!

If you ever get a chance to attend a Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction, do it! It’s tantamount to a pilgrimage that every car guy must take at least once in his life. Even if you’re not buying or selling a car, you’ve got to see one for yourself. Next up is the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Las Vegas NV, on Thursday, Sept 25 through Saturday, Sept 27. Go to the auction and have some fun in Vegas while you’re there. How cool is that? Then of course ‘the big one’, the grand daddy of them all, Barrett-Jackson’s huge Scottsdale AZ auction takes place in January, and I’ll be there. Hope to see you there. I’ll be easy to spot, I’m the guy taking all the pictures of the Muscle Cars.
