2009 Pontiac G8
2009 PONTIAC G8 BACKGROUND
Both Australian and the US have vast open spaces and long, wide-open freeways, and because of this both countries shared a similar affinity for large V8-powered rear-wheel-drive cars. This came in handy in the mid-2000s when Pontiac began tapping into this rich resource of GM-Australia’s Holden Division. The modern-day GTO was born out of this, and so was the 2009 Pontiac G8. The GTO was based on the Aussie-designed and built Holden Menaro, and the G8 on Holden’s Commodore. These are great cars with loads of power, good handling, solid feel, and lots of personality. The G8 launched in the US in 2008, just as GM was slipping into bankruptcy, and they shuttered the entire Pontiac Division in 2009 as part of the ‘restructuring’. Cars like this could have redefined Pontiac, but alas it wasn’t enough to save the brand. Today, Chevy is importing a version of it which they call the “SS”.
2009 PONTIAC G8 FEATURES
The base G8 received a 3.6L V6 making 256-horsepower, and was quite responsive. But the real news was under the hood of the G8 GT models. They got GM’s Corvette-derived 6.0L LS1 V8 making 355 ponies.
