“The LAST TRANS AM”
2002 PONTIAC TRANS AM – THIS WAS THE LAST ONE!
I came across this drop-dead gorgeous ’02 Trans Am at the Good Guys Show in Pleasanton CA on March 19, 2016. The owner was close by and as we talked about the car, I mentioned that it must have been one of the last Trans Ams ever built, since ’02 was the last year for the Firebird and the Camaro. She told me that it was THE last one made, as verified by the Pontiac Historical Society. Wow! What can you say to that?! Nothin’… Just adore the car! And what’s not to like? This bright red beauty was in near-showroom condition and well-optioned.

The standard Trans Am engine was the 5.7L LS3 making 310 horsepower in standard trim, but with the optional Ram Air package, as pictured here, it made 325. While its nice to call this legendary engine family a ‘small block Chevy’, all it shares with the classic Chevy small block are its bore spacing and its deck height. Otherwise, no parts are interchangeable. However, despite the seeming archaic pushrod-and-rocker-arm design, the new LS is a paragon of modern technology. And it does some things that DOHC 32-valvers can’t. Like making possible an overall lower engine height, which in turn allows for lower hoodlines on GM cars, like the Firebird/Trans Am, the Camaro and the Corvette. Here, our subject car has the top-of-the-line WS6 Ram Air package.
