1999 Pontiac Trans Am

1999 PONTIAC TRANS AM BACKGROUND
Little changed from 1998. However, a new Torsen limited-slip differential was now standard on all V8 models and V6s with the performance package. Other new options were a Hurst shifter on 6-speed cars, and a power steering fluid cooler on all V8s.

NEW ENGINE FOR THE 1999 TRANS AM
Pontiac got access to Chevy’s latest version of its venerable small block, the Gen III 346 cubic inch (5.7L) LS1. It was the dawn of a new age, as every V8 that GM would field since has been based on it. It was a total clean-sheet redesign of the small block V8. Retaining the pushrod valvetrain reduced vertical height, allowing for lower hoodlines that the competition, who were using tall DOHC designs. There is no question that the LS-series has been one of the most successful high-performance engines in modern times. It powers CorvettesCamaros, a variety of Cadillacs, and even Chevy & GMC pickups and SUVs. It has been pushed all the way out to 7.0 liters (427 cubic inches), and in its supercharged 6.2L form, 650 horsepower. That is 650 reliable, drivable horses, thanks to the low end torque of the classic big pushrod American V8 design.
