1977 Trans Am
1977 TRANS AM BACKGROUND
For 1977, the Trans Am gets a whole new look. Gone are the round headlights, replaced by 4 rectangular units set into a new grille, which itself was set into an aggressive new one-piece flexible plastic nosecone. The look was awesome, and sales showed it. 1977 was also Pontiac’s 50th anniversary, and a special paint scheme was created to commemorate it, the Black-and-Gold Edition. Burt Reynolds would do more for Trans Am sales than any other person, by co-starring with one in the hit movie “Smokey and the Bandit”. 26,177 Trans Ams were sold in 1977.

1977 TRANS AM ENGINE OPTIONS
Non-California Trans Ams received either a Pontiac 400 (labeled “T/A 6.6” on the hood) or the Oldsmobile 403 (labeled “6.6 Liter” on the hood). They wheezed out 180- and 185-horsepower, respectively. However, Californians didn’t even have it that good. Due to their one-state-only smog laws, the only engine you could get in a ’77 T/A there was the Chevy 305 and 350 V8.
