1974 Dodge Challenger

1974 DODGE CHALLENGER - THE LAST YEAR
1974 was the last year for the classic E-body twins, the Dodge Challenger and Plymouth Barracuda. In fact, the last one rolled off the assembly on April 1, 1974, 10 years to the day after the very first Barracuda was built. Cosmetically, the sheetmetal on the ’74 was nearly identical to that of the ’73, with the normal minor changes to trim and details.

1974 DODGE CHALLENGER SALES WANE
Ever-tightening smog and safety regs were forcing drastic changes in the cars, their engines and the way they ran. Lap and shoulder belts with an inertial reel made their debut, as did the dreaded and hated seatbelt ignition interlock, which kept the car from starting if the seat belts weren’t fastened. Thankfully, it was a one-year-only deal. In the engine room, there were now only two engines to choose from, the base 318 V8, and the 360. It was the only year you could get a 360 in a Challenger. The 340 LA-series small block V8 was replaced at the end of 1973 by the 360 V8, also a small block, making 245hp, not bad for the times, but nothing compared to 390hp Six-Packs and 425hp Hemis of just a couple of years before. Alas, the muscle car era was over, killed by government regulation, gas shortages, and insurance companies. In its swan song year, the Dodge Challenger sold only about 16,000 units.
1974 DODGE CHALLENGER ENGINE OPTIONS
Gone were all the big blocks, and also the Slant Six. Only 2 engines were available on the 1974 Dodge Challenger. The standard engine was the 318 with 4-barrel making all of 150 horses. The only other engine option, and the top-line engine at that, was the 360 4-barrel making 245 horsepower, barely enough to keep in interesting. Alas, it was the end of an age!

WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED

We are growing as fast as we can, gathering and taking eye-popping photos of awesome Classic American Muscle Cars, doing research on specifications and history, and writing content. We all love these great cars, so it’s not like work, in fact, it’s a blast. But it does take time. If you see that we’re lacking in some area, we just don’t have the photos and/or content yet to finish. Give us some time and as we get more eye-popping photos, we will continue to flesh out the site. Join us as we grow, but please be patient with that growth.

PS: Special thanks go out to Specialty Sales (www.SpecialtySales.com) for the hundreds of eye-popping pictures they've allowed us to use. Specialty has 4 classic car showrooms in the San Francisco Bay Area full of gorgeous classics. We'd also like to thank The Goodguys (www.good-guys.com) for putting on some of the best car shows around, and allowing me to take all these great pictures. Thanks again to you both.
