1967 Pontiac GTO

1967 PONTIAC GTO
MINOR STYLING CHANGES

For the first time since its inception in 1964, the GTO did not get a major re-body. The 1967 Pontiac Tempest and LeMans, and with them the GTO, were largely carried over from the 1966 model year. While the body remained largely unaltered, there were several minor trim changes that differentiated them. There was a distinctively new front grille, the GTO badges on the fenders was moved to the rocker panels, the tail lights went from louvered to eight separate units, four per side. There was also a new styled Rally II wheel, center cap and glamour ring.

A NEW AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

After having only the lowly 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission to choose from in auto boxes since the first GTO rolled off the assembly line in 1964, it was replaced in the 1967 Pontiac GTO with the 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic 400 (TH 400) with a Hurst Perofmance Dual-Gate Shifter, which allowed either fully automatic operation or manual gear selection, a feature that was decades ahead of its time. The 2-speed auto was retained for economy models of the Pontiac Tempest and LeMans.

PRODUCTION NUMBERS

Total GTO sales for the 1967 model year totaled 81,722 units. This was made of the same 3 body styles as always: The most-popular (by far) 2-door Hardtop (postless) sold 65,176 units; the Convertible sold 9,517, and the 2-door Sports Coupe (with post) sold 7,029. It was a good year for the GTO.

1967 Pontiac GTO INTERIORS

SMOG & SAFETY ARE HERE TO STAY
Emissons controls reared their ugly heads for the first time in any GTO sold in California, which was little more than a PVC (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve and a closed breather. But new emissions regulations were just the beginning. New federal laws were requiring a whole new range of safety equipment to protect passengers in case of collision. A new energy-absorbing steering wheel & column, a padded dash, non-protruding knobs & 4-way emergency flashers were all standard. Shoulder belts became optional for the first time. Also for the first time in a GTO, front disk brakes became an option.

1967 Pontiac GTO ENGINES

MIXED NEWS ON THE ENGINE FRONT
There was mixed news for GTO enthusiasts: the Tri-Power carburetion setup (three 2-barrel carbs) was replaced by a single Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel. However, the trusty 389 was bored out to 400 cubic inches (6.5 liters), and the high-output engines got a new head with revised valve angle, for better breathing. As it turned out, Ed Cole used his considerable influence at General Motors to end Pontiac’s use of Tri-Power, a Pontiac option since 1957, in order to make it a Chevrolet Corvette exclusive. The new 400 was available in 3 versions, including for the first time in a GTO, a 2-barrel engine rated at 255hp at 4400 rpm and 397 lb/ft at 4400 rpm. The base 4-barrel engine produced 335hp at 5000 rpm, as before, and the highest torque of the 3 engines at 441 lb/ft at a low 3400 rpm. The high-output 400 made 360 hp at 3600 rpm, same as the Tri-Power had the year before with only 389 cubic inches of displacement, and 438 lb/ft of torque at 3600 rpm.

MORE TO COME FROM AMERICAN-MUSCLE-CARS.NET
WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED

We are growing as fast as we can, gathering and taking eye-popping photos of awesome Classic American Muscle Cars, doing research on specifications and history, and writing content. We all love these great cars, so it’s not like work, in fact, it’s a blast. But it does take time. If you see that we’re lacking in some area, we just don’t have the photos and/or content yet to finish. Give us some time and as we get more eye-popping photos, we will continue to flesh out the site. Join us as we grow, but please be patient with that growth.

PS: Special thanks go out to Specialty Sales (www.SpecialtySales.com) for the hundreds of eye-popping pictures they've allowed us to use. Specialty has 4 classic car showrooms in the San Francisco Bay Area full of gorgeous classics. We'd also like to thank The Goodguys (www.good-guys.com) for putting on some of the best car shows around, and allowing me to take all these great pictures. Thanks again to you both.
