1961 CHEVY IMPALA STYLING
1961 was a major generational-change year for the Chevy Impala. It was brought over onto GMs B-platform (shared with other full-size GM cars from Pontiac, Buick, and Oldsmobile), and was given a totally new look. Cars in general, and the Chevy Impala in particular, were getting straighter and boxier, with a trimmer look than before. The Sport Coupe introduced a new “Bubbleback” rear window treatment, much sought-after today by collectors. A uniquely 1961-only body style was the 2-door sedan with post (pillar or B-pillar). 6 tail lights made the ’61 unique.

1961 CHEVY IMPALA IS THE FIRST SUPER SPORT
Chevy introduced the world to the Super Sport, or “SS” model designation for the first time on the 1961 Chevy Impala. It was a rare option at the time. While the Horsepower Wars had been stewing for some time, the Muscle Car Era hadn’t quite started yet, so people weren’t yet clambering for anything and everything that looked fast. So few were ordered.
